Rudd mainly inhabit calm, nutrient-rich and heavily vegetated lowland waters, including ponds, lakes, backwaters and slow river sections.
They commonly move among vegetation and in the upper layers of the water. Rudd are social fish and can form sizeable shoals.
Their diet includes plankton, terrestrial and aquatic insects and a substantial amount of plant material.
Spawning takes place in shallow, densely vegetated areas. Males pursue females into vegetation and the highly adhesive eggs attach to plants and roots.
