Barbel mainly inhabit clear, well-oxygenated medium to large rivers with strong current and gravel or stony substrates. They may occasionally occur in lakes.
Adults often form shoals and are particularly active around dawn and dusk. They commonly use deeper areas and cover near bridges, banks and other structures.
They feed mainly on the bottom, taking small crustaceans, insect larvae, molluscs and other invertebrates. They may also consume small fish and occasionally algae.
Spawning takes place in very shallow, fast-flowing riffles over gravel substrate. Adults may migrate upstream before spawning.
