Spinycheek crayfish inhabit slow rivers, canals, ponds and lakes. They tolerate turbid water, soft muddy or sandy substrates and relatively degraded environmental conditions.
They are highly adaptable and can withstand low temperatures, reduced oxygen concentrations and some forms of pollution. They may also travel over land to colonise new waters.
They are omnivorous and feed mainly on detritus, plants, plankton and benthic invertebrates, but may also consume fish eggs and other animal material.
Reproduction is generally sexual. Mating may occur in spring or autumn and females can store sperm before producing several hundred eggs carried beneath the abdomen.
