Marbled crayfish can live in many standing and flowing freshwater habitats including ditches, ponds, lakes and rivers. They are strongly associated with vegetated areas and can tolerate low dissolved oxygen.
They are highly adaptable and can exploit a broad range of habitats. All known marbled crayfish are females capable of producing genetically very similar offspring without mating.
They are omnivorous and may consume plants, algae, detritus, invertebrates and other available animal material.
Reproduction occurs by parthenogenesis: no male is required. A single female can produce viable eggs and establish a new population, contributing greatly to the species' capacity to spread.
