Common carp favour relatively warm, slow-flowing or still waters such as lowland rivers, canals, ponds and large lakes, often with soft sediments and vegetation.
They are hardy and adaptable. Feeding activity is often pronounced around dawn and dusk, and carp regularly search through bottom sediments for food.
Common carp are omnivorous, consuming many benthic organisms and invertebrates as well as a range of plant material.
Spawning occurs in warm shallow areas, often among vegetation or on seasonally flooded margins. Adults may move considerable distances to reach suitable spawning habitat.
